EpsonScan

EpsonScan is software designed with all users in mind, and makes it easy to get the best results for your images with the minimum of effort.

EpsonScan can be used either as a TWAIN driver in programs such as Adobe PhotoShop or as a standalone programme. Whether you’re new to the software, a home user or a professional, EpsonScan can work at your knowledge level. The programme incorporates three different graphic user interfaces:

  • Full Auto Mode
  • Home Mode
  • Professional Mode

How EpsonScan works

When EpsonScan is started for the first time it will default to Full Auto Mode, however it can be easily switched in the top right corner of the programme. Once the software is closed the programme will remember the mode chosen the next time it is used.

Although EpsonScan can work with all Epson scanners, the extent of its functions are dependant on the scanner being used.

For this demonstration we will work with the Perfection V750 Pro scanner which can use nearly all of the EpsonScan features. We will focus on the Professional Mode which offers the highest flexibility of functions, and we’ll explain in the features that simplify necessary adjustments and increase productivity.

As a first step to EpsonScan you can define the preview, colour settings, film sizes for thumbnail preview and others. To use the simplified tools for colour adjustment, the Colour Setting needs to be set to Colour Control - this is also the default setting.

Image adjustment

The Professional Mode offers several options to control the quality of the final scan such as Histogram Adjustment, Tone Correction and Image Adjustment.

It also offers a number of tools to simplify those adjustments such as Auto Exposure, Colour Restoration and a Colour Palette tool.

  • Auto Exposure will correct deficiencies in the exposure of your image
  • Colour Restoration transforms your old, faded or wrongly exposed photo into one with true-to-life colour and sharpness. You can use this function to restore printed photo, films or slides
  • Colour Palette is a new tool that enables you to fine tune the colour of an image by picking the colour you perceive as most important, (for example the skin tone,) and using that colour to adjust the image to your liking

Digital ICE Technology, Dust Removal, and mulitlevel USM (Unsharp Mask Filter), de-screening and grain reduction can be used to further enhance the image if required.

  • Digital ICE will remove dust and scratch marks from colour photos, films or slides. However, its use is restricted if you have black and white Kodachrome films. It is also important that you only use this tool if you have dust and scratches on your film
  • USM is used to increase the sharpness of your image. For the Unsharp Mask Filter it is important to note that less is often more. Too strong sharpening for example may result in a too strong edge contrast and unnatural sharpness

Productivity

EpsonScan includes several features that can make life easier especially when you need to scan a larger number of photos, slides and films.

Thumbnail preview

Before you start your first preview, you can choose the type of preview by clicking on the arrow on the right side of the preview button. You can choose between thumbnail and normal.

Normal lets you define the scanned areas manually whereas thumbnail view will automatically create thumbnails of all the images available on the holder. Please note that for medium format the correct film format has to be set up in the configuration menu.

Normally you have to adjust all the attributes of the scan, such as colour correction, scan size and USM for each marquee. If you have multiple images that require comparable adjustments or have to be scanned at the same size you can use the normal mode and you only need to set the marquee once. You can then save the settings and this template will also remember the position of each marquees.

Batch scanning

In normal view, you create a batch for scanning by selecting the marquees or frames that you wish to scan. To do so you press the Crtl-key and the left mouse button while the cursor is on the image.

In thumbnail view you can easily unmark the images you do not wish to scan. All others will be batch scanned when you initiate the scan. While the batch is being scanned you can leave it and work on other things.

Marked images will be batch scanned.
